Mozia

The tiny island of San Pantaleo was once the wealthy Phoenician city of Mozia. In the late 19th Century Joseph Whittaker, whose family a hundred years earlier had moved from Yorkshire to join in establishing the Marsala wine industry, purchased the island and began the archaeological excavations that are continuing to this day. His house – now a museum – contains an enormous collection of objects found when the ancient city walls, harbour and necropolis were cleared.

In 1979 the most superb statue of a charioteer was discovered and now forms the principal exhibit of the collection. It is, without doubt, one of the finest ancient Greek works of art to be seen anywhere. (The reason for its presence here on the island makes a fascinating story).
